If you check that KZ400 home page on Wikipedia, it says that it should have an electric starter on it, as well as a kick start. If I see it in person, it'd be something I would ask, but it's a very old bike ( 1974 ), so should I really expect most of the amenities of most newer bikes? It wouldn't make a difference on how it rode, it would just be a bit more difficult to start, and I really don't even think it'd be difficult to start if it worked perfectly?
I know that my car has drum brakes, and I know that it is possible to change them to disc brakes, is it possible to do the same on such a motorcycle? Please let me know if that is not possible or a TON of work! My take on it is this though, it IS only $300, it wouldn't be ridden long distances, or hard by any means, and if there are things on it that could be updated to make it safer, the money that I might be saving buying it in this condition may allow me to make updates to it. Although, it could go the complete opposite way and by buying it not fully working correctly, the amount of money spent on replacement parts may come out to equal the amount of money I could have spent on a newer, working bike. But the knowledge that would be gained fixing it up to working ability and knowing the bike in and out may be helpful in the future, you know? I appreciate any opinions and scepticism, as I know nothing compared to 99% of the members here! I have the willingness to try and learn and understand what people say, and want to hear the truth, regardless of how mean it can be. Also, this is another important question, but may not be too important as I might have found another, newer, step up model for a bit more ( price can easily be negotiated, one would think ). How much would a title be, and what would be the steps to actually get one? I have heard of things such as a bill of sale, stating that the bike has changed owners legally, and that it IS yours, but haven't found much information about how you go about getting a new title for a bike, how much it would cost, if you need one while you are not riding it, etc etc. If the bike isn't running, there shouldn't be any reason to pay money for something that would never be needed until you're out and about, but for all I know that's completely wrong and you need one at all times, regardless of the situation! The '74 does not come with a title, and I'm not sure about this '84 KZ440 I just stumbled upon in St. Joseph ( Anyone from around there?! ), so we'll just have to see. I definitely am not rushing into this, as one would think these old bikes aren't going to fly off the market TOO quickly ( knock on wood ), so I'm trying to do all my research and understand what I may be getting into before I even consider getting one. Being a young student, you always want everything and may not understand what comes with it when you want it, and if there are hidden costs that I won't be able to pay myself, then I just won't be able to do it and that's just life!
