As a cyber defender, this is one of the most terrifying hacks I have seen.

FBI, Department of Justice, Universal Music, RIAA, MPAA, Viacom...all down within an hour of the launch.

Additionally, they stopped a website that promotes copyright infringement. These people broke the law, the DoJ and FBI shut them down. Disagreement with the law doesn't mean you don't have to follow it.

These "hacktivists" seem to think that they get to do whatever they want because the wield the LOIC stick. That IS the definition of mob rule, "if there are enough of us, we make the rules". The rule they want is that they want to commit copyright infrindgement and with the DoJ shutting down a site that they use to do that, they decided to use LOIC and hit them back.

Either way, some of these 20k hackers will be publicly arrested, and the rest of these "hacktivists" will ebb back into their mother's basements until their headless leader, Anonymous, beckons them to do their dirty work again. Wonder if Anonymous will raise money to bail them out? Hm, I haven't heard of them doing that for any of the other members that have been arrested.

anonymous arrest - Google Search - Anonymous helping their buddies out of jail...oh...wait.
In related news:
Anonymous Brings Down the DOJ and FBI Websites, and You Might Be an Accomplice - Forbes - 10 years in prison

I'm with you on freedoms, but the freedom to break the law without consequences aren't the freedoms I'm interested in.

I wonder how many millions of dollars this will cost to repair and rebuild the damage they've done? Anonymous doesn't care though, in their minds, your ends justify THEIR means.
