Ok, so I have been riding for going on 3 years now and still can't do a wheelie. I can bunny hop by poping the clutch at high RPM at very low speeds I am just afraid of 12'oclocking the bike for I watched my buddy do this about two years ago on the same bike as me I have a 2005 Yamaha YZF600R so its heavy I just wanna be able to ride one out for a bit any tips????? I am open to any suggestions. I tried watching some videos on youtube but minimal success, I think all I learned to do is burn my clutch.

Honestly, I think the best thing you could do to learn wheelies is buy a CRF50.... start on that and once you get a feel for balance point and how to effectively use your back brake, then go to the big bike.
50's are small and easier to control, if you wreck it it doesn't matter, and you will get hurt less! Trust me I still wore gear when i was learning on the fiddy cause you can really hurt yourself, but I probably wrecked mine 500 times and it still keeps going! those things are practically bullet proof! And I can ride a pretty good wheelie on one, sometimes I can even do circles on it (I'm still learning) |

Clutching isnt hard, it just takes balls. I used to clutch my ninja 250 all the time.. until I looped it. Now I might pull up a power wheelie once in a while, but clutching for me is so impossible becuase my balls retreated a bit after the looping ~ There is a thread in the stunt forum you may want to check out, 'how to clutch it up' has video, text and personal opinions/suggestions on wheelieing~

Theres a couple of ways I do it..one is to hit a bump in the road and goose it the same time, thats cheating I know. The other way I do it is bump or compress the front shocks and then when the bike is decompressing I just give it gas and up I go. Or you can regear your bike like some of the stunt guys do

**Don't go out and try any of this...
With last two bikes I've had (07zx14/04ZX10r on giggle juice) I just twist the throttle back decently fast in first until the balance point on my big ass bike, and hang on for the ride while shifting through the gears until I chicken out past 140mph or so. Everyone has a limit lol I do like to "clutch it" up as well. Honestly, I feel it's safer due to the fact you don't have to get going fast enough in a particular gear in order to get the the RPM's up high enough for your motorcycle to wheelie. What I'm trying to say is... you can bring your bike up to the b.p. at a lower mph by clutching it instead of going say... 30mph then hammering the throttle. To the OP(original poster) you'd better take it SLOW when learning to wheelie. Those fairings aren't cheap at all. Like Tater said... find yourself a 50cc dirtbike to learn on. Gear-up, and give her hell lol It will cost you more up front, but will save you in the long run. Just remember... baby steps... and be safe!

So i never realized that midmo had a bike forum, i'm a avid user of stuntlife.com which as a forum for stunters across the world.
My reply is not full of intent to show everyone else how ignorant they are but i just think a little missinformed. I'll try to clear this up for you. There are several ways to pull that front tire up in the air. Power Wheely, depending on the bike. take off in 1st gear get about 5grand (on my 07 gsxr600 street piece) let out and right as soon as the front forks compress get back into it you may need to vary at what rpm you go in based on your weight bike size etc. just play with it a little. BUT I DO NOT RECOMEND THIS METHOD. Bounce wheely, this has the same principal as the power wheely by pushing down on your pegs and front bars you compress the front shocks and on the shock rebound you give it some throttle and it comes up BUT I DO NOT RECOMMNED THIS METHOD. Clutch Wheelys, clutch wheelys are probally the safest and most reliable wheely's and cand be done through out the gears up to about 4. <that statement also is made under the assumption you have stock gears (sprockets). This is done by going a average speed we will say 45 mph in about 2nd gear. the rpms do not matter. while doing 45 mph constantly pull in your clutch to disengage it, after you feel it disengage, rev up your bike and drop the clutch. you want to keep doing this raising the amount of rev based on if your bikes front tire comes up. =once you've gotten to the point where the tire jumps up a little (2-3 foot), your ready for the next step. as you drop the clutch on the bike and the tire comes up, grab a hand full of throttle to bring the front tire on up. Now I know your thinking thats crazy dropping the clutch and giving it gas, well thats where throttle control and the back brake come into play. you need to play with your throttle to find out just where enough is and where not to go. At any time during a wheely you feel like your coming up too quick or your going to (loop) the bike{go over backwards} use your back brake. it will bring the nose down and bring you out of the wheely. Alot of stunters will have a bike meant for the abuse wheelys and variouse other crazy things can put on a bike. but for you casual wheelyer's, once you get that front wheel coming up learn to eazy out of the throttle on your way down so you don't just slam the front wheel down and potentially blowing out a front fork seal. But a front fork seal is always cheaper than going over backwards and having to put the bike in the garage and start one of those horrible rebuild episodes. I hope this helps out anyone interested in the wheely process, I'm not a expert and by no means condone the use of such dangerouse techniques on public roadways ( 1. you can pop it up with out worrying about other vehicles, or if you lay it down not getting ran over by a 18 wheeler. 2. Less people to see you if you fail epically yo , if anyone has anything to add to that or would like to correct me on something feel free to.

cworley, thanks for the post. That helped me out a lot. I never understood how to do a clutch wheelie until now. Ive watched videos but they go way to fast and don't explain very well. I can do a power wheelie but cant hold it and don't feel comfortable because of the fast acceleration that is incorporated.

I agree with the rest of the people here. Clutch wheelies are the easiest to control and much safer because you have more room for error with less power in 2nd gear. Also a big tip when I have taught friends is get use to hitting your rear brake. What I've made my friends do is clutch up a wheelie and immediately hit the rear brake to bring it down. This engraves into your head that the rear brake will bring you down. The rest is throttle control until you can find that balance point.

just food for thought......the yzf600r's are horrible about getting 2nd gear knocked out of them, so if you start leaning on that transmission pretty hard be prepared to have one or more gears replaced at some point.
